<description>In this episode Robin Stebbins interviews Tonya Crombie is a certified life coach who likes nothing better than helping parents manage their children's and their own anxiety. Tonya has an MBA and a doctorate in Industrial/Organizational psychology. We talk about the gifts of anxiety and how to manage more effectively. We explore why our kids our doing great during the pandemic and it is the adults then need the most help managing their anxiety right now. Life coach and amazon best selling author, Tonya Crombie, Ph.D. joins me to discuss tools and techniques she uses herself and teaches her clients to help manage their children’s and more importantly their own fears and anxiety. She will cover concepts from her book, Stop Worrying About Your Anxious Child that apply to all parents and their preschool to college-aged kids. A few topics we discuss like why is right now (this period of social distancing, no school, no activities) is one of the best opportunities we’ve ever had to teach our kids skills to manage anxiety? kids aren’t feeling anxious right now so they are open to learning, parents are feeling anxious, so great opportunity to be honest with our kids and show it’s normal to feel anxiety and overwhelm, even mom feels it sometimes,, great opportunity to introduce skills by modeling them, “I feel anxious. I’m going to meditate (breathe, do yoga, dance…) for 5 minutes. Would you like to do it with me?, kids might more open to trying stuff with their parents just because it’s different or a break from whatever they are doing. What are some of your favorite tools and techniques to help manage anxiety?, slow down, breathe, notice what’s happening physically in the body, notice emotions I’m feeling. What do you say when your clients want a quick fix?, taking a breath and slowing down can be a quick fix in the moment., However, it takes practice to learn to do it because it’s not the way you’ve always done things., the other things I recommend like meditation and questioning your thoughts are long-term strategies but like exercising regularly, can yield amazing long-term benefits. What do you recommend to parents who are struggling with judgement from friends, family, and complete strangers about how their anxious child behaves?, first do all of the "in the minute" strategies a recommended before, take a breathe, notice your body, notice your emotions., When feeling calm, ask yourself “what am I making this mean?", Ask if it’s true, feel into your gut and ask if you can absolutely know it’s true (sometimes this is enough because when we tap into our calm centered self, we know it isn’t true.), Ask if the opposite might also be true., Remind yourself that no one has more history or data on your child than you do. When you are calm and centered you are able to observe your child and know what is going on better than anyone else.
